Should he have his thyroid removed?
My husband, 69, has a Big lump that you can feel on the right side of his neck. I'm upset because they did not only a biopsy but an ultrasound then said, " the results were inconclusive." Hello? The dr. wants to remove it, he said " it may not be cancer but I think it is." Is this normal for labs or doctors to be so incompetent?Do they think , " oh, well he's SO old, I'd make a lot of $$, so I hope he'll say ok Rip it out " My husband is putting it off until he has some sort of symptoms as it has been in there for many years and only 5 10 % of thyroid tumors are cancer. we found out. The doctor never told us this. Should he go under the knife?

Why do I have to have the other side of my thyroid removed?
So I got my test results for a thyroid nodule that was removed with the left side of my thyroid a couple of weeks ago and the doctor says that it is papillary thyroid cancer. The doc also took out some lymph nodes and they were all negative for cancer, so it looks like its confined to the thyroid and just that lobe I'm hoping . My question is, what happens if I leave the other half of my thyroid and do not do the iodine treatment? Is this even an option? My doctor says that I could do that but that he recommends I just remove the other half, but I REALLY don't want to do that, at least not anytime soon, so can I just do nothing for now and hope that all the cancer is gone?

What are the risks of having my thyroid removed?
About 2 years ago I was diagnosed with graves disease not thyroid cancer . Since then I have been on all sorts of medications. Right now I am on the max dose of methimazole and my hormone levels are still out of control and my doctor wants me to go to a specialist. I have heard more than once that I may have to get a thyroidectomy. I've tried to do some research on this topic online before I see a specialist, but I can't seem to get any straight answers. I know this sounds really vain and conceded, but if I have a thyroidectomy, won't I get really fat? I know that's the least of my wories right now, but I'm already a little overweight.

Does having 1/2 of thyroid removed cause the other 1/2 to enlarge to compensate for the missing 1/2?
I had 1 2 thyroid removed 3 years ago. I've been seeing an endocrinologist for a few different things, and he hasn't said anything about what's left of my thyroid being enlarged. Went to another doctor last week for a regular checkup and he felt my throat and said my thyroid was enlarged. I was surprised and he said, " Oh it might just be compensating for the half that's missing." He's not an endocrinoligist, so I wasn't sure if he knew what he was talking about, or he was just guessing. I go for my next endo. appointment next month, so I can ask him them. but in the meantime I am just curious if anyone has ever heard of this. Thanks
